How to organize kitchen cabinets.
I think we can all agree that organizing is an ongoing task. We as homeowners know that a well organized space is great, but it takes careful maintenance to really achieve an organized space. Here are the very best tips I’ve gathered. Here is how to organize your kitchen cabinets.
My heart is that this article will inspire you to organize, eliminate and love your kitchen again!
#1. Look at your kitchen as a whole.
What do you want to accomplish as a whole? How to organize kitchen cabinets can be easy if you take it one step at a time! Here’s how.
Write down 3-5 goals YOU have for your kitchen cabinet organization.
Is it to be able to simply find your items when needed? Is it to have a clean looking space that you’re proud of?
My goal for example; is a cohesive kitchen, minimal items in it, to accomplish each task in it with ease and flow, without clutter.
#2. Eliminate.
Take it one cabinet at a time.
Empty the entire cabinet, throwing items that can be tossed as you go. A lot of how to organize cabinets has to do with how much we actually have. Speaking from experience! I’ve had many a crammed drawer in my lifetime so far. But, I do not like it one bit so taking this process throughout my home has been a miracle!
According to expert Marie Kondo, the number one problem is messiness is having too much.

After you’ve emptied the entire cabinet, and eliminated now it’s time to sort.
#3. Sort.
Most of how to organize kitchen cabinets comes down to sorting. Place like items next to like items within those cabinets and in the kitchen as a whole.
Think of how it will feel actually utilizing your organized kitchen.
If you’re eating breakfast for example and want to get a bowl and then your cereal and then milk, what would be the easiest way to go about it? Without making lots of unnecessary turns and twists in your kitchen.
Try to organize the cabinet so it looks aesthetically pleasing when you open it, as well as being practical and efficient. Sometimes we need extra height with organizational pieces too.
Use this same process for each category in your kitchen.
Category Suggestions:
- Bowls, plates of various sizes.
- Cups, glasses, goblets.
- Tupperware, sippy cups, plastic items.
- Silverware
- Cooking utensils.
- Pots, pans and lids.
- Spices.
- Breakfast food items.
- Dinner boxed/canned items.
- Kitchen towels/rags.
- Cleaners/sponges etc.
If you gather all items of like category in one spot it is easier to eliminate and then categorize. You may have more than one category in one cabinet depending on your cabinet size, which is completely doable.
Once you’ve eliminated, then sorted make up a scenario for each group. You can do this on paper or in your head.
For example, “How would if work if I had all of my pasta, and sauces here in this cabinet??” Think of pros and cons. If there are more cons than pros try to find a different location. Practice this step with each of your categories.
Now time to sort and put the cabinet contents back in an orderly fashion.
