How to make your own painted Christmas ornaments.
Here is an easy, do it yourself, homemade, painted Christmas ornament hack. That’s a mouthful! This technique has been going viral, and here’s how I did it super simple. You’ll want to transform your tree ornaments asap, I’m imagining.
What you need:
- old Christmas ornaments, I bought these years ago (plastic or glass)
- black spray paint, I used Rustoleum 2x Ultra Cover Paint & Primer
- gold metallic spray paint, I used Rustoleum Metallic Gold Paint
- off-white liquid paint, I used this
- gold glitter, here’s the brand I used
- old carboard piece or box
- 1 plastic storage bag, like Ziplock
That’s it! It’s super easy, all you need are these items and some spare time. I literally did mine, in a an hour or so. The less particular you are the better. While they dry between coats, you can work on another project or I just came inside and did my dishes. That works too.
Step #1. Gather materials for painted bulbs
Gather paint, glitter, Ziplock bag, ornaments, cardboard and take it outside. (I don’t recommend spray painting in closed spaces!)
Also keep in mind you may get some residue paint, and or glitter on the surrounding areas. This project can be done on the grass, like I did just be careful not to get your paint everywhere.
Step #2. First coat of paint on ornaments
Lay the ornaments out on the cardboard. It’s ok if they are touching, this adds to the character of the hand painted Christmas ornaments. Spray on a thin coat of the black spray paint. Let dry, and come back in about 15-20 min to add another layer of paint. Keep rotating Christmas bulbs and apply spray paint layer until covered. It’s important to note: don’t lay on the spray paint too heavy or it will take too long to dry and will likely have paint drips all over the ornaments.
Step #3. Second coat of liquid paint & decorate bulbs
Now you need your plastic bag. Open the bag, and drop in about 4 TBSP of the white paint. Spray in about 1 TBSP of the Metallic spray paint into the bag. Be careful not to inhale the fumes!
Sprinkle in a little glitter, and drop in your first Christmas ornament!
From the outside of the bag, rotate the ornament around using your hands, to cover the bulb in paint.
This step don’t have to be perfect, you just want a nice layer on of the gold and white paint.
Take bulb out of bag gently, and lay on cardboard to dry.
Step 4. Touch up painted ornaments
Before the Christmas ornaments dry completely you may want to sprinkle on some more glitter, or spray on a little bit more of the metallic spray paint.
These painted Christmas ornaments are your creation! So feel free to make them look however you’d like them to look best! This is your project!
That’s it! Once the painted Christmas ornaments dry, I attached the metal hanger on them, and strung through some ribbon. Place a knot about 3′ above the ornament hanger, and you’re done! Now is the really fun part, decorating your tree with all of the ornaments you’ve created! Merry Christmas! I’d love to see what you did, post your pictures of your own ornaments in the comments below.
