When the kids jump in to help they feel so important and they also learn life skills that they will never forget.

I love baking healthy treats. But when my daughter wants to help I will occasionally let her use a cake mix. It’s fast and she can feel like she accomplishes something quickly in a short period of time. Plus the back of the cake mix usually shows picture instructions and that is easy for her to follow.

What you need for coloring the cake mix:

How to color cake mix to make a pink ombre effect is easy to do! You just need cake mix, plus your ingredients for your cake mix (usually oil, eggs and water), and food coloring. I suggest a yellow cake mix and food coloring of choice.

We created a pink ombre cake together but you could really use any color you want! The main idea is you’re just adding different quantities of the dye to each layer to create the ombre (getting lighter or getting darker) look. Very simple.

Yellow cake mix, already prepared, divided evenly into 5 bowls.

Supplies needed for ombre cake:

Use a measuring cup to divide the batter to be sure to evenly distribute the batter into each bowl.

Line the bowls up, each with their own spoon or spatula.

Now its time to dye the layers.
If you’re using gel food coloring use a clean toothpick.

Place the toothpick into the gel and swirl it into the first bowl. Begin with just a tiny amount at the tip of the toothpick for the lightest color.
If you are using liquid food coloring, then begin with one drop then in the next bowl 2 drops, 3 in the third and so on.
We used liquid food coloring and we began with,

1 drop in the first bowl

2 drops in the second bowl

4 drops in the third

6 drops in the fourth and

8 drops in the fifth and final bowl.

I wanted a stark difference from the first layer to the last.

Next steps after dying your cake layers:

Thoroughly stir each color into the food batter bowls. We used 8″ wide round cake pans and it baked up wonderfully. Use baking spray and flour to grease the cake pans.

Cut small parchment paper circles the size of the base of each baking pan as a liner for easy removal of the cake.

Once the pans are ready, pour each batter into each pan and place and preheated oven and cook for allotted time.

I started off with about 12 minutes for all of them because the batter was very thin in each cake pan.

You don’t want your cakes to burn. Since you are dividing it up into five different pans you will have to cook it for less time than the package says.

Finishing up the ombre cake layers:

That’s it! I inserted a toothpick and it came out almost clean and took the cake pans out of the oven. Let cool on a cooling rack on the counter for about 10 minutes.

Invert the cakes onto the cooling rack, to let cool completely.

How to stack and ice your ombre cake layers:

We placed the first and lightest layer on a cake stand painted with a cooking paintbrush with warm raspberry jelly. Then a cup of icing spread out to cover the cake the top of the cake.

Placed on the second lightest color and repeated this process all the way until the fifth layer was on the top. No jelly on the top, just icing. We then covered the sides with icing and I used a flower large tip to decorate the outside of the cake with large flowers.

I divided the icing in two separate bowls and added purple and green food coloring to create different colors of flowers for the outside of the pink ombre cake.

Now you know how to color a cake mix to make a pink ombre effect! This is so easy as I’m sure you realize. It makes for a fun surprise when you cut into the cake. The kids will love it!! I know mine do.
